Halloween Crochet Patterns for Pumpkins, Ghosts and Everything Spooky

Halloween has quietly become the biggest crafting season after Christmas, and crochet suits it better than almost anything. The shapes are simple — a pumpkin is a ball, a ghost is a cone, a bat is two triangles and a body — so you can make a whole shelf of decorations in a weekend without any of it being difficult. And unlike Christmas, nobody expects Halloween crochet to be tasteful, which means you can use the loud orange. This collection brings together our Halloween crochet patterns in one place. Pumpkins in every size, ghosts, bats, witch hats, eyeballs, skulls and spiders, granny squares and blankets in black and orange, wearables, treat bags and small market makes. Every pattern is written in US crochet terms with stitch counts at the end of every row, photo tutorials at the steps people get stuck on, and an instant PDF download that's yours to keep and print.

Crochet pumpkins

The pumpkin is the defining Halloween make and the one that carries the season. Ours come in a range of sizes from keychain-scale up to a large display pumpkin, plus flat pumpkin appliqués, pumpkin coasters and a pumpkin granny square. The important part is the construction. A plain single crochet pumpkin looks fine for about a week and then sags as the stuffing settles, which is why almost every home-made one ends up looking tired. Our patterns use a ribbed or post-stitch body with a firm stuffing method and a cinched centre, so the ridges hold and the shape stays. It's explained with photos because it's the step that makes the difference between a decoration you keep and one you quietly bin in November. The pumpkin hat sits here too, in baby through adult sizes. The newborn version gets photographed more than anything else we sell.

Ghosts, bats and spooky characters

Ghosts are the easiest amigurumi in existence — a cone, a flat base and two embroidered eyes, finished in under an hour. Make five in an evening and hang them in a doorway. Beyond ghosts, the character range covers bats, black cats, spiders, skulls, eyeballs, witches, monsters, and small spooky dumplings — the round squashy plushies that have taken over the last couple of years and suit Halloween colours perfectly. There's a no-sew section within this. Assembly is where most people's amigurumi goes wrong, so several of the Halloween characters are written to come off the hook finished, with no sewing at all. If you've tried amigurumi and been disappointed by how it looked once it was put together, start with those.

Witch hats and Halloween wearables

The witch hat is the single most searched Halloween crochet garment, and it's a genuinely good project — a cone and a brim, worked in the round, finished in an evening. Ours come in child through adult sizes with a stiffening note so the point stands up rather than flopping over. Beyond hats, the wearables cover Halloween cardigans and jumpers, spider web tops, candy corn dresses, bandanas, headbands, hair clips, fingerless gloves, leg warmers, earrings and jewellery. Newborn and baby costume sets are in this section too — a pumpkin set with hat and booties, and a small ghost set. Costumes are worth planning ahead for. A full crochet costume is a bigger commitment than it looks, and October is too late to start one.

Halloween blankets and granny squares

The Halloween granny square is the most requested blanket project of the season. Black, orange, purple and cream in a simple square repeat, or motif squares with pumpkins, ghosts, bats and skulls worked into them. The blanket range covers granny square afghans, skull and pumpkin motif squares, mosaic designs, graphgan charts for anyone who works from a grid, baby blankets in softer Halloween palettes, and loveys for small children. Be realistic about timing. A full-size Halloween afghan is thirty to seventy hours, so if you're starting in October it's a next-year project. The mosaic and graphgan designs take longer still, because the colour changes slow everything down.

Halloween decor and home

Garlands and bunting, wreaths, doilies, coasters, pot holders, car hangers, lanterns, pillows and mantel decorations. Garlands are the best value in this section — a string of ghosts, bats and pumpkins across a doorway takes an evening and does more to the room than anything else you could make in the same time. The lanterns work the same way, worked as covers that slip over a battery tealight so nothing is near a flame. Halloween gnomes belong here too. They've followed the same path as the autumn and Christmas ones and sell just as well, usually in purple and black with a spider or pumpkin hat.

Making Halloween crochet to sell

Halloween is the second-best market season after Christmas and considerably less crowded, which makes it worth taking seriously if you sell. What moves: small items in multiples, priced so someone buys three without thinking. Keychains, ghosts, mini pumpkins, treat bags, earrings and hair clips. Large display pieces draw people to the stall and rarely sell on the day. Start in August. The selling window is short — the last two weeks of September and the first three of October — and after the 31st the whole category dies overnight, which is not true of Christmas stock. Every pattern here carries a small-business licence so you can sell what you make.

Quick and easy Halloween crochet

If you're short on time, the order is: a ghost, then a mini pumpkin, then a bat, then a keychain. Four projects, about four hours, and you have a complete set of decorations. Our beginner patterns are marked in the listings and carry extra photo steps. Halloween is a good season to learn amigurumi, because the shapes are simple and the tolerance for imperfection is higher than at any other time of year. A slightly wonky ghost is funnier than a perfect one.

Frequently asked questions

What's the easiest Halloween crochet project for a beginner?

A ghost. A cone, a flat base, two embroidered eyes, done in under an hour. It teaches you working in the round and even decreases, which covers most of what amigurumi needs.

How do I stop my crochet pumpkin from sagging?

Use a ribbed or post-stitch body rather than plain single crochet, stuff it firmer than feels right, and cinch the centre with yarn pulled through from top to bottom before you attach the stem. The firm stuffing is the part people underdo. Our patterns show the method with photos.

What yarn should I use for Halloween crochet?

Worsted weight acrylic for most of it. It's cheap, it comes in the right oranges and purples, and nobody can tell once a pumpkin is stuffed. Use cotton for anything that needs to hold a shape precisely, like coasters or a stiffened witch hat.

How do I get a crochet witch hat to stand up?

Work it at a tighter tension than the yarn label suggests, and stiffen the brim either with a wire threaded through the final round or with fabric stiffener. The pattern includes both methods — the wire is easier and more reliable.

How long does a Halloween granny square blanket take?

Thirty to seventy hours depending on size, spread over several weeks. Motif squares with pumpkins or skulls worked in take roughly half again as long as plain ones.

Are these safe for babies and small children?

The baby blankets, loveys and costume sets are, with embroidered features and no removable parts. Check the safety note in each listing.

When should I start Halloween crochet?

August for anything large or for market stock, early September for decorations, and any time for the small pieces since most take under an hour.

Are there free Halloween crochet patterns?

Yes, we publish free patterns on the blog each autumn, including a basic ghost and a mini pumpkin. The paid patterns here are the fuller versions with photo tutorials, multiple sizes and support included.

Can I sell what I make from these patterns?

Yes. You can sell finished items you've made yourself, at markets or online. You can't resell or share the pattern file itself.

Are these patterns in US or UK terms?

US terms throughout, with a conversion key on the first page of every PDF.
