Granny Square Crochet Patterns

The granny square is the most made thing in crochet and it has earned that position. It's portable, it's forgiving, it uses up odd balls, it can be picked up for four rounds between other things, and a pile of them turns into a blanket, a bag, a cardigan or a cushion depending on what you decide later. No other crochet unit is that useful. It's also the best thing a beginner can learn, because a square is finished in minutes rather than weeks. You can make a bad one, understand why, and make a better one before you've lost interest. The basic granny square

Start here whatever you're planning. Our basic granny square pattern covers the traditional open version with the clustered groups and gaps, and the solid granny square worked without spaces for a denser fabric. Both come with the things most free versions leave out: what to do at the corners so they don't skew, how to start a new round so the join doesn't show as a seam up one side, and how to change colour without a visible knot. Those three details are the whole difference between a square that looks handmade and one that looks homemade, and none of them is difficult once someone shows you. There's a chart version included alongside the written instructions, for anyone who follows a diagram more easily than a row of abbreviations. If you want the shortest possible route to a finished square, the easiest granny square pattern in this section is three rounds and takes about ten minutes.

Joining squares together

This is the part people underestimate. A hundred squares is a pleasant few weeks; joining a hundred squares afterwards is a joyless weekend that stops a lot of blankets from ever being finished. The joining guide covers join-as-you-go, which attaches each square to its neighbours as you complete it so there's nothing left to do at the end, plus the flat slip stitch join, the single crochet ridge join and simple whip stitching, with photos of what each one looks like in the finished fabric. Join-as-you-go is the one we'd recommend for any blanket over about thirty squares. It is the single most useful technique in this whole collection and it is the reason our blanket patterns get finished. There's an edging section too, since a granny square blanket needs a border to sit flat and most people stop before they get there.

Flower and motif squares

Once the basic square is automatic, the motif squares are where it gets interesting. Each one is a granny square with something worked into the centre, so they join to plain squares and to each other without any recalculation. The range covers flower squares in several forms, sunflower, daisy, rose, heart, star, starburst, sunburst, moon, celtic knot, and animal squares including cats, chickens, elephants and angels. The sunflower and daisy squares are the two that get made most, usually as a full blanket rather than mixed in. Different shapes

The square isn't the only option and the same construction logic applies to all of these. Circular granny squares, rectangular grannies for anything that needs to be longer than it is wide, diagonal squares worked corner to corner, triangles for edges and hexagons for a honeycomb layout. The rectangular version is more useful than it sounds. Most blankets aren't square, and building one from rectangles rather than squares means far fewer pieces and far less joining.

Granny square blankets and afghans

The classic, and still the best use of the technique. How do you crochet a basic granny square?

Start with a ring, work clusters of three double crochets separated by chain spaces, and put two clusters with a chain between them at each corner. Each round adds one cluster per side. The corners are what people get wrong — if the chain space at the corner is too small the square curls, and if it's too big the corner flares.

What's the easiest granny square for a beginner?

A three-round basic square in one colour. No colour changes, no ends to weave, and it's finished in ten minutes. Make five before you change anything.

How many granny squares do I need for a blanket?

What are peggy squares?
